Analysis of film opening in sub genre- Neamh

Paranoia

The film begins with the main character running through the streets at night, straight away this will make the audience ask themselves several questions such as, who is he running from? Where is he going? Is he in danger? Can he be trusted? The titles begin fading in and out of blackness to add to the mysterious effect.

This canted shot often is used in films to give the impression of chaos.
In this image it shows the character running but it shows him running slightly delayed behind himself as if it were a shadow jumpy effect. This is particularly effective in psychological thrillers as it gives the illusion that the mind is being played with.

An establishing shot is used to set the scene and tell the audience where the film is taking place. The titling also says who the main character is and in this shot his voice can be heard.

A close up gives the audience some background into the character and brings them eye to eye with the character.

Time lapse effect is used to portray the setting as a busy vibrant place and shows us the contrast from day to night.

The titling also reflects the genre as it shows the word 'paranoia' as each letter is spaced out from each other. This could symbolise the actual feeling of paranoia and how each letter needs space from each other in order to function and not become overwhelmed.
